Why Ban on usage of Chinese mobiles in India

An IMEI number is a unique 15-digit that identifies the handset. Most branded handsets carry a genuine IMEI number, which allows law enforcement officials to easily monitor individuals suspected of terrorist activity. Mobile phone users can check their IMEI number by typing *#06# on their mobile phones.

Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has ban usage of unbranded Chinese mobiles that do not have IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) numbers. DOT worries that these unbranded Chinese mobiles can be used by terrorists.

Sources said that India currently has around 30 million handsets operating on the mobile networks without the IMEI number. Most Chinese phones do not support IMEI. Most of these phones are sold at a very low cost. The mobile phone companies have undertaken to acquire the necessary equipment to track these phones by April 15 and discontinue their services thereafter - a process that is expected to take another 15 days, that is, by April 30. Around 30 million mobile phones or about 8 percent of all mobiles in the country are therefore expected to become useless by the end of the month.
